Calcium Stearate  is a versatile fatty acid salt. It is mainly made from palm oil-based stearic acid and calcium salts. This compound is widely used in many industries. It acts as a stabilizer, lubricant, dispersant, and release agent. Calcium stearate helps improve product quality and processing efficiency. It is a white powder that is safe to handle.  it does dissolve in hot organic solvents and acids.

Calcium stearate is White powder, insoluble in water, cold ethanol and eth yl ether, soluble in organic solvents such as hot benzene, benzene and turpentine, slightly soluble in hot ethanol and eth yl ether. When heated to 400ºC, it will decompose slowly and be flammable. When met with strong acid, it will decompose into stearic acid and corresponding calcium salt, which has hygroscopic.

Physical and chemical properties

Applications

1.Calcium stearate is used as a flow agent and surface conditioner in some candies such as Smarties, jawbreakers and Sprees.

2. It is a waterproofing agent for fabrics.

3. A lubricant in pencils and crayons.

4. A lubricant in the dry drawing method of wire production

5. The concrete industry uses calcium stearate for efflorescence control of cementitious products used in the production of concrete masonry units i.e. paver and block, as well as waterproofing.

6. In paper production, calcium stearate is used as a lubricant to provide good gloss, preventing dusting and fold cracking in paper and paperboard making.

7. In plastics, it can act as an acid scavenger or neutralizer at concentrations up to 1000ppm, a lubricant and a release agent. It may be used in plastic colorant concentrates to improve pigment wetting. In rigid PVC, it can accelerate fusion, improve flow, and reduce die swell.

8. Applications in the personal care and pharmaceutical industry include tablet mold release, anti-tack agent, and gelling agent.

9.Calcium stearate is a component in some types of defoamers.

10. Anticaking agent for drugs etc.

11.Food grade calcium stearate can also be used as an emulsifier, flavoring agent, anti-dusting agent, stabilizer, release agent, and/or thickening agent.
