Alginic acid is pale yellow filamentous or powdery, odorless, almost tasteless, insoluble in water, methanol, ethanol, acetone, chloroform, soluble in alkali hydroxide solution, and helps to suspend, thicken, emulsify, bind, etc. effect.

Alginic acid, also referred to as algin or alginate, is a hydrophilic or anionic polysaccharide isolated from certain brown seaweed (Phacophycae) via alkaline extraction. It is present in cell walls of brown algae where it forms a viscous gel when binding with water.   Alginic acid acts as a stabilizer and gelling agent in various experimental applications. Alginic acid exists in the cytoplasm in its natural state and acts to strengthen the cell wall. Alginic acid combines with various cations in seawater to form various alginates.

Grade: JECFA standard (INS No.400) alginic acid, Q/SJJ 0008S-2021 alginic acid.

Water Solubility: Insoluble in water. Storage Conditions: Alginic acid dispersions are susceptible to microbial spoilage onstorage, which may result in some depolymerization and hence adecrease in viscosity. Dispersions should therefore be preserved withan antimicrobial preservative such as benzoic acid; potassiumsorbate; sodium benzoate; sorbic acid; or paraben. Concentrationsof 0.1–0.2% are usually used.Alginic acid hydrolyzes slowly at warm temperatures producing amaterial with a lower molecular weight and lower dispersionviscosity.Alginic acid dispersions are susceptible to microbial spoilage onstorage, which may result in some depolymerization and hence adecrease in viscosity.
