Product Overview
Fructooligosaccharide (FOS) is a functional oligosaccharide composed of fructose units linked by β(2→1) glycosidic bonds. It is commercially produced from sucrose through enzymatic transfructosylation, or obtained from chicory root extraction.
FOS is not digested by human digestive enzymes, but it can be fermented by beneficial bacteria in the large intestine. Therefore, it is recognized as a prebiotic fiber and a low-sugar carbohydrate ingredient.
Compared with sucrose, FOS has lower sweetness, lower calorie impact and better digestive tolerance. It is widely used in functional food, beverages, dietary supplements and low-sugar product formulations.
Character
Prebiotic activity: Selectively stimulates the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria
Low sugar property: Lower sweetness and milder taste than sucrose
Good solubility: Easily soluble in cold and hot water, clear solution
Stable processing: Heat resistant under neutral and slightly acidic conditions
Low calorie: Partially indigestible, reduces calorie load in finished products
Dietary fiber source: Contributes to dietary fiber content
Wide compatibility: Suitable for food, beverage and supplement formulations
Main Functions
1.Intestinal Flora Balance
FOS acts as a prebiotic to promote the proliferation of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, and helps maintain a balanced intestinal microflora.
2.Digestive Health Support
It supports normal intestinal function, helps improve bowel regularity and maintain a healthy digestive system.
3.Blood Sugar Management
As a low-sugar carbohydrate, FOS can be used as part of a balanced diet to reduce the glycemic load of food and beverages.
4.Lipid Metabolism Support
Long-term moderate intake may help improve lipid metabolism and support healthy cholesterol levels.
5.Mineral Absorption Enhancement
FOS fermentation produces short-chain fatty acids, which may help improve the absorption of calcium, magnesium and other minerals.
Applications
1.Functional Food
Used in low-sugar biscuits, cereals, nutrition bars, jams, dairy products and high-fiber food formulations.
2.Functional Beverages
Applied in prebiotic drinks, fiber drinks, low-sugar beverages, sports drinks and oral liquids.
3.Dietary Supplements
Core raw material for gut health supplements, prebiotic compound powders, synbiotic products and low-sugar nutritional supplements.
4.Sweetener & Fiber Blends
Used as a sugar replacement and dietary fiber fortifier in healthy food and beverage systems.
